When to Have Bariatric Plastic Surgery

Most surgeons consider the best time for bariatric plastic surgery is when the weight has stabilized and remained stable for several months. Typically, this means at least one year after gastric bypass surgery (or after a successful dietary regime).

Types of Bariatric Plastic Surgery

In simple terms, there are two types of plastic surgery to help re-shape the body after massive weight reduction, or reduce localized fat deposits. (1) plastic surgery operations that remove fat, loose skin and tighten muscle (eg. abdominoplasty/ tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift); and (2) plastic surgeries that only remove fat (eg. liposuction). These are the two basic types of bariatric cosmetic surgery although some operations (eg. panniculectomy) fall into neither category, as they remove fat and excessive skin but do not tighten muscle.

Best Area of the Body for Surgery

Surgeons commonly prefer to commence plastic surgical intervention on the most problematical area, which in most cases is the abdomen. Even so, some patients prefer to begin with a breast reduction as post-operative care is short, facilitating a swift return to work. On the other hand, for some patients a thigh lift takes priority.

Bariatric Plastic Surgery Procedures for Different Areas of the Body

Bariatric-type plastic surgery can be performed on almost every part of the body. Here are the main procedures.

Abdomen (Tummy-Tuck, Abdominoplasty)
Female Breasts (Mastopexy)
Male Breasts (Gynecomastia)
Thigh (Thighplasty)
Torso (Body lift, Belt Lipectomy, Panniculectomy)
Arms (Brachioplasty)
Face (Face lift)
Neck (Platysmaplasty)
Buttock (Excisional back lipectomy)
Side Buttock (Flankplasty)

Lipoplasty to Remove Excess Fat

Liposuction (suction lipectomy or liposculpture) can be performed wherever there are excess fat deposits, including:

Face/Neck, Arm, Back, Butt, Abdomen, Front Thighs, Inner Thighs, Leg/Ankle, Female Breast, Male Breast

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
