Statistics on Bariatric Surgeries

Weight loss bariatric surgery includes stomach stapling, stomach banding and gastric bypass. Here are some selected statistics showing the rise of such procedures as a means of treating severe obesity.

Statistics on Death Rate

According to a study of 66,000 obese people, 3,328 patients had bariatric surgery between 1987-2001. The study revealed that 30 days following the surgery, the death rate reached a statistical rate of 1.9 percent. It was also discovered that those who did survive the surgery lived longer than the severely obese people who did not have the surgery.

Statistics on Spending

According to a statistical review by the Rand Corp. released in March, one in five health care dollars spent by people ages 50 to 69 will be obesity-related by the year 2020, up 50% from 2000. Current statistical studies estimate that over 9% of all U.S. healthcare dollars spent go to the treatment of medical conditions either caused by or exacerbated by being overweight or obese.

Statistics on Lap Band

Since its clinical introduction in 1993, more than 95,000 LAP-BAND System procedures have been performed around the world.

Statistics on Roux-en-Y Bypass and Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

A recent report analyzed statistics on two popular weight-loss surgeries - roux-en-Y gastric bypass and vertical banded gastroplasty - performed at community hospitals across the U.S.

It shows that the percentage of laparoscopic surgeries rose from 2 percent of all weight-loss operations in 1998 to 16 percent in 2001. During that time, the number of both traditional and laparoscopic bariatric surgeries rose from 12,775 in 1998 to 53,685 in 2001.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
