What is Plastic Surgery?

Derived from the Greek word "plastikos" and Latin "plasticus," meaning to mould or shape, plastic surgery is reconstructive surgery involving all areas of the body. Plastic surgery is not the same as cosmetic surgery - which may be regarded as a branch of plastic surgery, typically involving about 15 percent of most plastic surgeons' workload.

However, for simplicity, plastic surgery is commonly divided into two types of surgical procedures: reconstructive and cosmetic.

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormalities of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental problems, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is typically performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. This type of plastic surgery includes: treatment of skin diseases; complex wound and burn treatment; post mastectomy breast reconstruction, breast reduction, congenital and development breast deformities; treatment of facial deformity, disease, trauma including: facial fractures and tumors, vascular malformations, wound and laceration treatment; reconstruction of hands, legs and torso.

Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic plastic surgery is typically performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem: eg. face-lift, brow-lift, neck-lift, upper arm lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery); cosmetic rhinoplasty (nose surgery); cosmetic otoplasty (ear surgery); liposuction; collagen injections; abdominoplasty (tummy tuck); breast augmentation.

Bariatric Plastic Surgery

At present, plastic surgery is considered to be cosmetic surgery, although surgeons have been exploring methods of plastic reconstruction after massive weight-loss, which are similar to procedures performed after digestive surgery. Thus some bariatric plastic surgeries may in future be reclassified as reconstructive plastic surgery.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
