Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty) Plastic Surgery Procedure

The plastic surgery operation known as neck lift , is designed to address the problem of excess skin, jowls, skin droop (ptosis) and loose muscle tissue in the neck and face. Patients who have undergone dramatic weight reduction but who are left with loose surplus skin around the neck and facial area are good candidates for this procedure. Where there are localized fat residues, liposuction is often used in combination with surgical excision. The operation can redefine the jawline for improved body contouring.

Neck and Face Lift

Neck lift, or platysmaplasty, is often combined with surgery on the upper and lower facial area. To treat the upper face, patients can have an eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and brow lift. Eyelid surgery addresses problems such as drooping and heavy eyelids and general ptosis in the eye area. Brow lift is a cosmetic procedure that tightens forehead skin thereby correcting drooping eyebrows and reducing horizontal creases in the forehead.

Neck Lift Operation

Neck lifts (outpatient procedures) are performed under general or local anesthesia. The operation takes 1-2 hours. Plastic surgeons typically make an incision under the chin or smaller incisions behind the ears. When performed with a face lift, the neck skin is lifted and re-positioned over the tightened neck muscles. Alternatively, if a neck lift is performed separately, the neck muscle is tightened through behind-the-ear incisions, and the surplus skin is then excised. Laser surgical techniques may be available.

Neck Lift - Risks and Complications

Numbness and scarring are two possible complications of this operation. In addition, some of the surgical enhancements of neck and face may not be permanent. Age may cause wrinkles and jowls to reappear. Patients are advised to discuss this drawback with their plastic surgeon.

Neck Lift - Post-Operative Recovery

Bandages and stitches are generally removed within 7-10 days. Neck lift patients typically return to work after 5-10 days, and light exercise may be resumed within 10-14 days. However, patients are advised to keep their head still and avoid turning or twisting for about 5 days after surgery and to avoid vigorous exercise for 4-6 weeks.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
