What is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy uses microinjections of conventional or homeopathic medication, or vitamins into the middle layer (mesoderm) of the skin to treat a specific part of the body. Advocates of mesotherapy describe it as helpful for cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation and even fat loss.

Mesotherapy for Fat Loss

Advocates of mesotherapy treatment claim it helps to melt body fat and thus represents a viable alternative to liposuction, without the complications or health risks.

Mesotherapy for Cellulite Treatment

The skin condition known as 'cellulite' typically affects the arms, thighs and buttocks of a wide range of people, mostly women, giving their skin a dimpled, 'orange-peel' or 'cottage cheese' appearance. Cellulite affects people of all ages and it is not linked to body weight. People with cellulite include those suffering from severe clinical obesity as well as those of normal weight, although all sufferers have a localized excess of body fat in the cellulite-affected area. If mesotherapy injections can cure cellulite, it would run counter to mainstream scientific opinion, as most doctors and scientists have yet to discover any cure for this condition. One reason for the lack of a cure, is that there is no clear clinical evidence as to the cause of cellulite.

Other Benefits of Mesotherapy

The wide range of benefits claimed for mesotherapy treatments include:

- Melting away of excess fat
- Improved blood flow to the area
- Improved migraine headaches
- Improved back pain
- Improved constipation
- Improved arthritis

What Sceptics Say About Mesotherapy

Critics of mesotherapy say although it was developed over 50 years ago it has never conclusively proved its efficacy in clinical trials. Regarding its fat-loss benefits, or its superiority to lipoplasty, plastic surgeons say there is no evidence to support such a claim. Lastly, there is concern among surgeons and dermatologists as to the exact nature and side-effects of the drugs used in the mesotherapy microinjections.

What is the Cost of Mesotherapy?

An average session costs about $500, and 10 to 15 sessions are recommended, for a total price tag similar to liposuction. [Source: CBS News]

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
