Male Breast Liposuction Gynecomastia Treatment

Liposuction to reduce male breasts is a comparitively common procedure. As with female breast liposuction, the best candidates are men with breasts containing a significant proportion of fat. Thus men who have experienced massive weight loss and whose breasts now contain large amounts of loose skin are not good candidates for lipoplasty. Such patients require traditional excisional surgery to remove the surplus skin. But men with excessively fatty breasts can expect significant improvement with liposuction surgery.

Male Breast - Fatty vs. Glandular Tissue

The regular male breast comprises both fat tissue and glandular tissue. It is easy to remove fatty breast tissue by liposculpture, but more arduous to suction the tougher, more fibrous glandular tissue. A pre-operative mammogram is useful in determining the location and proportion of glandular tissue versus adipose tissue.

Pseudo-Gynecomastia - True Gynecomastia

There are two types of gynecomastia: true and pseudo. True gynecomastia, a rare condition, is characterized by a disproportionate amount of glandular tissue. There are a number of clinical causes for this conditions. Patients with true gynecomastia are not typically good candidates for lipoplasty surgery, because glandular tissue is too dense and fibrous to be removed with a suction cannula. Pseudo-gynecomastia, a much more common condition, is characterized by excess amounts of adipose tissue, but a normal degree of glandular breast tissue. Unless the breast area contains a high degree of loose skin - which needs excisional surgery - patients with pseudo-gynecomastia are good candidates for breast lipoplasty.

Tumescent Liposuction for Gynecomastia

The best type of liposculpture for gynecomastia is probably tumescent lipoplasty, as it has several advantages including: (1) Less scarring, due to the use of smaller incisions (adits); (2) Very little blood loss; (3) Less bruising; (4) Less risk of infection; (5) Faster recovery time. (6) Less risk of post-operative complications.

Cosmetic Results of Gynecomastia Lipoplasty

Patients can expect a significant improvement in breast-size - anything up to 50 percent. Patients with a higher fat-content of the breast may experience even greater success, although this should not be a firm expectation.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
