Traditional Lipoplasty Dry MethodThe cosmetic surgical procedure known as the Dry Liposuction has been discontinued as a method of body contouring, and largely replaced by tumescent liposuction owing to reduced health risks of the latter. Traditional Liposuction ProcedureThe dry technique for liposuction was performed in hospital, under general anesthesia, and typically involved patients receiving a blood transfusion owing to significant loss of blood when the excess fat was suctioned from the treatment area. In clinical liposuction trials, it was found that blood comprised about 30 percent of the tissue that was removed by liposuction using the dry technique. In addition, patients undergoing traditional dry liposuction operations suffered increased risk of hematoma (bleeding under the skin), and seroma (leakage of blood-serum under the skin). These post-operative complications still occur even with newer tumescent liposuction, but the risk is significantly reduced. Dry Compared to Tumescent LiposuctionPatients undergoing the tumescent method of lipoplasty are typically treated in an office setting, under local anesthesia, without any blood loss or blood transfusion. By comparison with the older traditional dry method, tumescent liposuction is faster, cheaper and incurs fewer health risks. That said, the use of smaller blunter cannulae, allied to the use of smaller surgical incisions, have also helped to reduce the health complications of lipoplasty surgery. For example, the use of more smaller incisions permits the cosmetic surgeon to access the subcutaneous fat from different directions (cross-suctioning) for a smoother, better contoured effect.
