Health Risk of Pulmonary Embolism From Liposuction

The danger of pulmonary thrombo-embolism (blood clot in the lung) is a known post-operative surgical risk associated with general anesthesia, surgical trauma, and obesity.

How Pulmonary Embolism Occurs During Liposuction

Embolism (blood clot) occurs when fat is loosened and enters the blood through blood vessels ruptured during cross-suctioning of fatty tissue. Tiny items of fat become lodged in the blood vessels, sometimes traveling to the lungs (pulmonary thrombo-embolism), or travel to the brain. Tell-tale signs of pulmonary emboli may be stabbing pain with shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. If you have the signs or symptoms of fat emboli anywhere in your vascular system, following liposuction, seek emergency medical care at once. All emboli are a serious health hazard and pulmonary embolisms can be fatal.

Pulmonary Embolism and Lipoplasty

Pulmonary embolism is the most common cause of death associated with lipoplasty surgeries. The main causes of death are: 1) Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot in the lung); 2) Infection; 3) Damage to Abdominal Organs (liver, intestines) or Lungs; 4) Drug Reactions and Side Effects of Anesthesia.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
