Back Lipoplasty Liposuction Surgery on the Back

Good candidates for this type of cosmetic surgery are patients with excessive infra-scapular fat, posterior axillary or waist fat, or lumbo-sacral fat, and reasonably good skin elasticity. Lipoplasty is limited to fat-removal, so for patients with very loose skin and impaired elasticity (eg. after massive weight loss) it is not a good option. Such patients may need excisional back lipectomy to reshape the back, although it may be combined with liposculpture for optimum cosmetic body contouring.

Adipose Tissue on Female Back

There may be several different accumulations of fatty tissue in the area of the back:

Infra-Scapular Body Fat
Found above the waist and below the shoulder blades - the adipose tissue that bulges just below the bra strap. This fatty tissue typically comprises a single subcutaneous layer, although it may bulge significantly with increasing obesity. Despite the fibrous nature of this type of fat tissue, it responds well to tumescent lipoplasty which can access infra-scapular back fat with microcannulas.

Cervico-Dorsal Fat
Found in the upper back below the neck. This fatty deposit can be liposculpted with relative ease and typically good cosmetic results.

Posterior Axillary Fat
Found on the upper-back just behind the armpit.

Posterior Waist Fat
Found in the lower-back just behind the hips. This fatty deposit can be relatively large but still treatable by liposuction surgery.

Lumbar Fat
Found in the lower back, just above the coccyx. These smaller fat residues are easily removed by lipoplasty.

Hyperpigmentation of Incision Adits

The back is prone to hyperpigmentation of the skin around incision sites. Any tearing or damage to the skin at these sites can cause marking of the skin - referred to as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. However, cosmetic surgeons performing tumescent liposuction use microcannulas so incisions (adits) are very small. Thus the risk of hyperpigmentation is greatly reduced.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2012 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
