How to Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery?

Bariatric or gastric bypass surgery may be an option for you:

(a) if you have a body mass index of 40+ (roughly 80-100 pounds overweight), or

(b) if your body mass index is 35+ and you suffer from diabetes, or any serious obesity-related condition such as heart disease or severe sleep apnea.

Having obesity-related physical problems that significantly interfere with employment, physical mobility or family function, may also make you a possible candidate for surgery.

Your Suitability for Gastric Surgery

Even if you meet the above criteria, you are unlikely to qualify as a candidate for weight loss surgery unless you are:

  • Ready to make long-term behavioral changes to your dietary and exercise routines.
  • Determined to make weight loss and improved health a serious priority.
  • Committed to long-term (even lifelong) medical follow-up.

Point is, your weight loss surgery will only be successful if you are prepared to change your eating and exercise habits, for the rest of your life. Otherwise, surgical complications, allied to weight gain, are almost inevitable.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2012 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
