Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The Roux-en-Y (pronounced "roo-on-why") gastric bypass is currently
the most commonly performed weight loss operation in the United States.
Roughly 70% of American weight loss surgeons use it as their primary weight
loss operation. It has been around for over 30 years and has been demonstrated
over and over to provide an excellent balance of weight loss and manageable
side effects. For these reasons, the gastric bypass is considered by many
surgeons and patients alike to represent the "gold standard"
weight loss operation.
Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
Also called Extensive Gastric Bypass with Duodenal Switch and Gastric
Resection
The biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch goes by many names.
Some refer to it by the initials BPD/DS. Many just call it the "duodenal
switch" for short. The National Institute of Health refers to the
procedure as an "extensive gastric bypass with duodenal switch."
While less commonly performed than the gastric bypass, this operation
has received a great deal of attention recently, particularly on the internet,
because it provides excellent weight loss while allowing you to eat larger
portions that a gastric bypass patient.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band
The Lap-Band is a small device made of silicone rubber which is wrapped
around the very uppermost portion of the stomach. Gastric banding is a
purely restrictive procedure, which means that it works by decreasing
the functional size of the stomach. The Lap-Band turns the stomach into
an hourglass shape -- the upper portion of the hourglass is called the
stomach pouch. The food you eat quickly fills the pouch, then empties
very slowly through the constriction created by the band, just like sand
passing through an hourglass.
