What is Gastric Banding?

The bariatric surgical procedure known as gastric-banding is a type of restrictive weight loss surgery. It's aim is to restrict food intake and thus calorie consumption by reducing the size of the stomach. No attempt is made to alter the anatomy of the digestive tract in the duodenum or jejunum. A popular gastric banding operation is Lap Band®. Gastric band weight loss surgery is also known as "stomach banding", or "gastric ring" surgery.

Types of Gastric Banding

There are several variants of gastric banding which differ in their method of stomach reduction. Some banding techniques rely on a gastric ring, some use a band, some use stomach staples and some use a combination. Typical procedures include: lap band, vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG), silastic ring gastroplasty (SRG), and adjustable silastic gastric banding (AGB). As stated above, all these bariatric banding operations seek to achieve patient weight loss by restricting volume of food intake.

Weight Loss Results of Gastric Banding

Malabsorptive surgeries like gastric bypass produce better weight reduction results than gastric banding. According to patient surveys, the average excess weight loss at five years after bypass is 48-74 percent, while mean weight loss after vertical banded gastroplasty (staples and band) is 50-60 percent. However, unless patients maintain their commitment to healthy post-operative eating and exercise, weight regain is likely.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
