Types of Bariatric Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Our practice at this time offers the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure in either by conventional methods or the laparoscopic minimally invasive approach, depending on patient's characteristics. The long limb Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure is a combined restrictive and malabsorptive procedure with much better results. The loss of 75% of excess body weight can be expected from this procedure in approximately 70 to 80% of patients. It results in better reduction in comorbid disease. It is much more extensive surgery with increased risks. However, as stated, benefits often increase the risk depending on patient's comorbid problems.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2012 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
