Types of Bariatric Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery helps you lose weight in three ways.

1. You eat less. The new small stomach pouch means you feel full after eating just a small amount of food.
2. Your food appetites change. After surgery, your body will not easily tolerate foods that are high in sugars and fats. You'll find these foods may make you physically uncomfortable. With this built-in control, called the dumping syndrome, you naturally avoid these foods. Other surgical procedures don't provide this important benefit of behavior modification.
3. You absorb less. Food now bypasses part of your digestive system, which reduces the amount of calories your body absorbs.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
