Types of Gastric Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Divided Gastric Bypass
The surgeons of Pacific Bariatric perform a procedure called the Roux-en-Y divided gastric bypass, widely accepted as the most effective surgical treatment available. During this procedure, the stomach is divided into two sections, reducing the size of the new pouch from about two quarts to two ounces. This drastic reduction in size limits your stomach’s capacity to hold food, making you feel full after eating only a small amount, and in fact, requiring you to eat substantially less.

The surgery takes approximately two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Pacific Bariatric surgeons are assisted by a well-trained surgical staff along with supporting specialists.

Pacific Bariatric surgeons perform the Roux-en-Y divided gastric bypass as an open or laparoscopic procedure. The latter is a less invasive surgical procedure. Instead of using one long incision, laparoscopic surgery uses a few small incisions in the abdominal wall. Our surgeons will advise patients whether or not they are suitable candidates for the laparoscopic procedure.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
