Types of Gastric Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The surgical procedure known as Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass divides the stomach to create a small pouch with limited capacity. A Y-shaped section of small bowel is attached to serve as the outlet from the stomach to the intestinal tract. The Gastric Bypass limits the amount of food that can be eaten and still allows you to feel full and satisfied. Also, due to the re-routing of a portion of the intestine, not all of the calories you eat will be absorbed.
The surgical procedure known as Gastric Banding limits the amount of food that can be eaten because a strong band is placed near the top of the stomach to restrict the size of the stomach pouch.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
