Types of Gastric Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Stomach Bypass
The current procedure of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, preferred by Comprehensive Surgical Specialists, does bypass most of the stomach and duodenum. Access to this important area by radiographic or endoscopic means becomes much more difficult. Gastric bypass is technically reversible, although the procedure is difficult and holds the inherent risks of reoperative abdominal surgery.

Many surgeons now perform gastric bypass by dividing the stomach. This has decreased the incidence of developing a communication between the stomach and the gastric pouch. Unfortunately, it increases the risk of leak and peritonitis (infection and inflammation within the abdominal cavity). If gastric and intestinal fluids leak into the abdominal cavity, reoperation may be life threatening.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
