Types of Obesity Surgery Performed

1. LAP-BAND
2. Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass

LAP-BAND
The newest procedure we are performing is called the Laproscopic Gastric Banding (Lap Band). This surgery has only recently had FDA approval for availability in the United States, although over 70, 000 of these procedures have been performed worldwide.

Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass
In the 1990’s the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass was designed from an earlier operation used to treat stomach ulcers. First a very small pouch is created at the top of the stomach with staples, then a segment of small intestine is bypassed and connected to the small pouch. This has three effects. One, the small stomach fills up very fast, forcing you to eat less food. Two, it keeps food away from the digestive enzymes which causes malabsorption. Three, if a person tries to cheat and eat foods high in sugar or fat, the Bypass brings on a side effect called “dumping syndrome". Dumping is a combination of nausea, chest and abdominal cramps, sweating and diarrhea-which teach you not to eat that food again. Because of the malabsorption, the RNY may have unpleasant side effects such as diarrhea, vitamin deficiencies or chronic abdominal pains. Some people can dump at every meal and become “intestine cripples”.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
