Bariatric surgery is a safe and effective treatment for morbid obesity. To help you gain a better understanding of bariatric surgery, we'll explain how the surgery works and give you the tools that will help you determine if you're a candidate. Through a surgical procedure called Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, surgeons permanently reduce stomach capacity. Gastric Bypass may be performed with laparoscopic techniques or with open abdominal surgery.

In our practice, over 80% of our sugeries are done laparoscopically. In 2003, 90% were done laparoscopically. The Gastric Bypass is considered by experts to be the most successful surgery for maximum weight loss and minimal nutritional risk.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
