Types of Bariatric Surgery Performed

Lap-Band and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
LAP-BAND® is a restrictive type of weight reducing surgery that creates a small stomach pouch. This limits the amount of food consumed and creates an early feeling of fullness. It is a major operation, but we use a laparoscopic approach which results in rapid recovery, generally less than a 24 hour hospital stay and minimal post-operative pain as a result of the small incisions used. It is adjustable. The stomach pouch outlet opening can be made larger or smaller by injecting saline into a port or reservoir implanted onto the abdominal wall at the time of surgery. The port is placed beneath the fat and skin and is not visible and must be accessed by your surgeon. The LAP-BAND® surgery is truly reversible. The band and port can be removed, if necessary, and the normal stomach anatomy and function are returned to the pre-operative state.

The LAP-BAND® system has been available worldwide since 1993 and there is an abundance of clinical information available regarding its ability to safely assist patients with weight reduction. The majority of patients can expect to lose approximately 60-70% of their excess body weight within the first 2 years of using the band. The complications of band surgery are minimal as compared to traditional bypass surgery. It is not an "investigational" procedure. The LAP-BAND® system was FDA approved for usage in the United States in June of 2001.

We are following the NIH (National Institutes of Health) guidelines for the treatment of morbid obesity. These guidelines, set forth in the NIH Consensus Conference of 1991, determined that surgical intervention is recommended for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 and above. Surgery is also medically indicated for persons with a BMI for 35 or higher accompanied by a serious co-morbid condition or because the patient’s weight interferes with normal life activities. In addition, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) and Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has established guidelines for the treatment of morbid obesity.

Our use of the LAP-BAND® system adheres to these guidelines. Our bariatric program institutes a multi-disciplinary approach (nutritional, physiotherapy /exercise, and psychological) to the surgical treatment of this disease and we are able to provide appropriate long-term care for our patients.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
