Jupiter Medical Center's Surgical Weight Control Program has introduced the newest surgical treatment for morbid obesity - the LAP-BAND or adjustable gastric band. The procedure is performed by Jefferson Vaughan, MD, Board Certified General Surgeon. Jupiter Medical Center is the only facility in Northern Palm Beach County to offer this procedure.

The LAP-BAND induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, restricting the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. The procedure may be recommended as an alternative for patients who are not candidates for gastric bypass surgery, or other treatments for morbid obesity. The LAP-BAND, an adjustable silicone band with an inflatable inner surface, is inserted using the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique.
