Types of Gastric Banding/Bypass Performed

1. Adjustable Gastric Banding: The Lap-Band ® System
2. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Adjustable Gastric Banding:
The Lap-Band ® System

The LAP-BAND® is a laparoscopically implantable device which gives patients another option for weight loss surgery. The LAP-BAND® is the least invasive of the weight loss surgeries. During the LAP-BAND® procedure, a hollow, adjustable, silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. Without cutting or separating the stomach or the intestines, the stomach is divided into two parts by the placement of a band around the stomach, a smaller upper part and a larger lower part, creating an adjustable opening between the two parts. The band is connected to a port which is placed under the skin, allowing the addition of fluid to the band. By adding fluid, the band is tightened, reducing the amount you can eat.

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The Citizens Bariatric Program offers what most experts consider the current "gold standard" for weight loss surgery: a proven and effective surgical procedure known as the Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.
The Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y stomach bypass combines a maximum long-term weight loss procedure with all the benefits of laparoscopic surgery. The procedure is performed with a state-of-the-art laparoscopic digital imaging system through tiny keyhole incisions. The operation is usually completed in less than two hours. Our average hospital length of stay is slightly less than 48 hours.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
