Types of Weight Loss Surgery Performed

1. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass/Vertical Banded Gastroplasty
2. Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Gastric Bypass/Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass/vertical banded gastroplasty is a combination operation that does restrict the amount of food eaten, but is only very mildly malabsorptive so that there is no malnutrition and such essential supplements as iron and vitamin B-12 can be easily replaced.

A vertical banded gastroplasty or silastic ring gastroplasty are operations which function identically and only differ in their technical design very slightly. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the “gold standard” and alone does work remarkably well, but because there is less gastric restriction without a band, late weight gain can occur.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

It is now possible to perform a gastric bypass laparoscopically through 6 small punctures instead of 1 incision. This helps to promote quicker recovery and earlier discharge from the hospital.

Some patients are not acceptable candidates for this approach. Consultation with a trained laparoscopic surgeon is necessary to determine if you are a good candidate. If you are interested in the laparoscopic gastric bypass, please discuss this in detail with Dr. Moore. He has extensive laparoscopic experience.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
