Gastric Bypass
“Bariatric” means weight. Bariatric surgery is a method to lose weight involving major surgery. There are several categories of procedures done: Gastroplasty, Gastric Bypass, Biliarypancreatic Bypass, and Intestinal Bypass (this last is no longer used regularly). All are major surgical procedures entailing all the normal risks of surgery.
Gastric Bypass is the “gold standard” of bariatric surgery. It is up to 80% successful at producing and maintaining weight loss.

Summary of the National Institute of Health Consensus Statement:

The National Institute of Health has published a “consensus statement” concluding that, given the appropriate guidelines, bariatric surgery is an effective method for achieving weight loss. For individuals 100 or more pounds overweight, dieting is successful only 2% of the time. By contrast, the treatment offerred by LITE DIMENSIONS is successful 80% of the time.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
