Types of Weight Loss Surgery Performed

1. Gastric Bypass
2. Revisionary Surgery
3. Adjustable Gastric Band (AGB)
4. Laparoscopic Surgery
5. Tummy Tuck

Gastric Bypass
The gastric bypass procedure creates a small gastric pouch high on the right side of the stomach. While there are many types of roux gastric bypass surgeries (proximal, extended, duodenal switch and Fobi pouch), documentation has shown the distal gastric bypass procedure to be the most effective for long-term weight loss. For this reason, SWLC primarily performs the distal gastric bypass procedure. However, patient input is very important and the operation is tailor-made for each patient. We also offer the Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass as an option, as well as the duodenal switch-biliopancreatic diversion.

Revisionary Surgery
Some older obesity operations allow weight regain or other medical problems over time. Revision of these procedures is often necessary to achieve the results sought from the original surgery. SWLC is a world leader in revisionary surgery, with extensive experience in revising vertical banded gastroplasty, roux gastric bypass and lap mini gastric bypass procedures. On average, patients have lost 92% of their excess weight 5 years after their revisionary surgery.

Adjustable Gastric Band (AGB)
As a day-surgery procedure, the minimally invasive AGB has a clear advantage over other procedures. The surgery is not open, the incisions are smaller, and recovery time is minimal. In fact, many patients go home the same day.
An adjustable gastric band is placed “laparoscopically” with the use of small incisions, thin surgical instruments, and a small internal camera that monitors the operation. Placed around the upper part of the stomach, the band creates a small “upper” stomach without cutting or stapling. This smaller stomach allows the patient to feel full sooner and stay full longer. As a result, the patient no longer feels the need to eat as much and, thus, loses weight.

Laparoscopic Surgery
The surgeons at SWLC are experts in laparoscopic surgery. For the patient, a laparoscopic gastric bypass (GBP) is less disabling than a regular open GBP. The hospital stay is usually 24 hours or less and the time off needed from work is often less than a week.

Tummy Tuck
A Tummy Tuck operation removes hanging skin on your abdominal wall and the "pot belly" appearance caused by significant weight loss or pregnancies. A Tummy Tuck is technically a panniculectomy/abdominoplasty; the excess skin is removed (panniculectomy) and the abdominal musculature is tightened (abdominoplasty). A Tummy Tuck is also referred to as an “Abdominal Wall Reconstruction.”
By tightening the muscles, your waistline is narrowed. Then excess skin is removed to fit your new body contours. If liposuction of your thighs or knees is needed, these procedures can be done simultaneously. The results of a Tummy Tuck, performed properly, are usually very pleasing. The abdomen is flat, the excess skin is gone and the body contours are impressive!

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
