Lap-Band - Formally called Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
The LAP-BAND® has been used in the European community, Australia, and Mexico since 1993. It was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in June of 2001. The LAP-BAND® is a flexible silicone band (much like a belt buckle) placed around the top part of the stomach. The inner surface of the band is lined with an inflatable balloon that is connected to a reservoir by tubing. The balloon can be filled with water by injecting the reservoir to make the band tighter around the stomach. LAP-BAND® is available in three different sizes.
The band works by decreasing the amount of food the patient can eat at one time. The adjustability of the band allows the surgeon some level of control over the patient’s weight loss. The amount of stomach above the band can hold approximately 20 to 25ml.

Roux-en-Y-Gastric Bypass
This procedure involves cutting the stomach with a stapler device leaving only a very small stomach pouch. This pouch can hold approximately 15 to 30 ml. This portion of the procedure ensures that the patient can only eat small portions of food. Next, the small intestine is cut, rearranged, and reconnected to the new stomach pouch. This portion of the procedure causes less of the food that is eaten to be absorbed by the body. This procedure may be done laparoscopically (minimally invasive) or through the traditional “open” (large incision) technique. Dr. Deol is trained in the laparoscopic technique.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
