Types of Weight Loss Surgery Performed
1. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
2. Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion w/ Duodenal Switch
3. Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is an operation that has gained wide acceptance
in the past decade, especially as laparoscopic versions have been introduced.
The operation has a weight loss potential in the range of 70-75% of the
excess body weight, on average, and the weight loss is fairly well sustained.
It does, in most studies, usually show some mild regain of weight at five
years post-surgery.
Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
This operation obtains the best weight loss (an average of around 80-85%
of excess body weight) of the three, with few side effects. The most important
feature of the operation is that it diverts the food stream so that it
is only in the last 75-100 cm, the "common channel", that the
food can mix with the digestive stream, in order to be digested and absorbed.
The result is a "malabsorptive" weight loss. The operation can
be done open or laparoscopically. It is especially good for people who
have a great deal of weight to lose. People can eat relatively normally
afterward, as opposed to the VSRG or the RNYGB.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure
The Lap-Band® is a product of Bioenterics Corp., a subsidiary of Inamed
Corp. It is a prosthetic device that wraps around the upper part of the
stomach to create a small pouch, restricting the stomach and thereby inducing
a weight loss through decreased intake of food. The small pouch acts to
induce a feeling of satisfaction after only a small amount of food.
