Types of Weight Loss Surgery Performed

1. Gastric Bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y
2. Lap-Band

Gastric Bypass
The WISH Center performs Gastric Bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y, to help you attain permanent weight loss. This surgery achieves its effects by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach, from which the rest of the stomach is permanently divided and separated. A segment of small intestine is the attached to this pouch allowing food to bypass most of the stomach and the first part of the intestine. This procedure is effective for weight loss because it reduces the amount of food that can be eaten at one time, and fewer calories can be absorbed by the new digestive track.

LAP-BAND
For select patients, the LAP-BAND® procedure may be the correct choice. This procedure uses an inflatable ring that is placed around the upper part of the stomach. The inflatable ring creates a small pouch and controls the flow of food. The ring is inflated or deflated until the goal weight loss has been achieved. One key advantage of this procedure is its ability to be adjusted in the office as well as the fact that it is easily reversed, if necessary.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
