Dr. Trace Curry

He is board certified and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. Before coming to Deaconess Hospital, he was on staff at Wayne Hospital in Greenville, Ohio.

Types of Weight Loss Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

The minimally invasive Roux-en-Y laparoscopic procedure used at the Deaconess Surgical Weight Loss Center is preferred for several reasons. Instead of an open incision, the surgeon works through four or five "ports," or small openings. This type of operation reduces operative risk, shortens hospital stay and helps the patients recover more quickly without unsightly scarring

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a tiny pouch at the top of the stomach and a segment of small intestine is connected to the stomach pouch. This type of surgery limits how much a person can eat. Usually after a few bites, a person feels full. The procedure also limits absorption of calories, which leads to the desired weight loss.

Following surgery, patients should not consume sugars or excess fat because they are not processed well by the small intestine. An unpleasant reaction can occur, called the "dumping syndrome." Our dietitian can help patients avoid this by coaching them through suitable meal choices.

In the educational process at the Deaconess Surgical Weight Loss Center, patients learn about healthy eating before and after surgery. They learn what type of food will be most beneficial them and what vitamins will ensure optimal health.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
