Types of Weight Loss Surgery Performed

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
According to the National Institutes of Health, surgical treatment is the only proven method of achieving long-term weight control for clinically severe, or morbid, obesity. People who suffer from this form of obesity are generally 100 pounds or more above their ideal weight and often are plagued with serious - or life threatening - health problems.

We offer the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as an effective surgical treatment option. During the surgery, the stomach is divided and a small stomach "pouch" is created. The intestines are rerouted so that food bypasses the lower portion of the stomach and the first portion of the small intestine. The procedure limits the amount of food a person can eat at one time. By rerouting the intestines, food absorption is altered.

Patients who undergo gastric bypass generally lose 70 to 80 percent of their excess weight. More importantly, most patients achieve better health and a new outlook for a better future.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
