Mandatory Tests
In addition to the tests that may have been performed by your family physician prior to seeing Dr. Snyder, several test are required by hospital policy within a week or so of your weight loss surgery. These consist of an x-ray of your chest, an electrocardiogram or heart tracing and a sample of your blood for routine testing. You will also be asked to give the laboratory a urine specimen. One of the tests checks for a bacteria that is associated with ulcers or inflammation of the stomach lining called gastritis. The bacteria is called H. pylori, and if your test is positive you will be required to take antibiotics before your bariatric operation. It is important that your stomach is as healthy as possible at the time of surgery to allow healing. It is very rare that test results demonstrate abnormalities that delay your bariatric surgery or suggest that other testing should be performed prior to your surgery.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks.
