Southwest Bariatric Surgeons has the only surgeons in the Austin area
performing restrictive bariatric surgery for the treatment of obesity.
Our surgeons are trained in both Gastric Bypass and Adjustable Gastric
Banding using the Lap-Band System. In addition, Southwest Bariatric Surgeons
has an on-staff clinical dietitian who consults with patients both before
and after surgery to foster weight loss success and good health.
Types of Gastrointestinal Surgery Performed
Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap Band)
The Lap-Band is an adjustable gastric banding system. Instead of cutting
or stapling, the surgeons implant a restrictive device that is both adjustable
and reversible. The device is implanted using laparoscopic surgery, a
minimally invasive procedure, reducing hospital stays and recovery time
(barring complications). Southwest Bariatric Surgeons has the only trained
Lap-Band surgeons in the Austin/Central Texas region.
Gastric Bypass
The other restrictive alternative is Gastric Bypass, either open or by
laparoscopic means. Gastric Bypass involves creating a small stomach pouch
that reduces how much food your stomach is able to hold. This procedure
has both a restrictive and malabsorptive component. It's a more complex
operation than the Lap-Band procedure and may require several days of
hospitalization (barring complications) and up to several weeks of recovery.
