Types of Gastrointestinal Surgery Performed

1. Gastric Bypass, Roux-en-Y (GBP)
2. Lap-Band, Gastric Banding
3. The Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, Laparoscopic

Gastric Bypass, Roux-en-Y (GBP)
This procedure is the bariatric operation of choice for 70% of US bariatric surgeons. The GBP has been performed for 30 years with a continuous evolution of technical changes to make it more effective and safe. This procedure is performed laparoscopically with a 2 night hospital stay in most cases.

Lap-Band Gastric Banding
Although only recently approved for use in the U.S., gastric banding with the Lap Band has nonetheless enjoyed a long track record of success, with over 60,000 procedures having been performed worldwide.

Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
This is an operation that is approved by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) for morbidly obese patients, but it is not widely done in the United States. We are one of the few programs nationally who perform this procedure using a laparoscopic approach.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
