Types of Gastrointestinal Surgery Performed

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RGB)
The Suburban Surgical Care surgeons have been performing bariatric surgery for a combined total of over 45 years. They have performed an estimated 8,000 weight loss surgeries since the inception of the practice and currently perform over 300 weight loss surgeries each year. The Bariatric operation combines the creation of a small stomach pouch to restrict food intake with the construction of bypasses of the duodenum and other segments of the small intestine to cause some malabsorption. Bariatric operations that cause malabsorption and restrict food intake produce more weight loss than restriction operations that only decrease food intake. Patients who have bypass operations generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
