Female Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

The plastic surgery operation known as breast lift, is mainly designed to reduce breast-droop. Although it may be appropriate for female patients who have lost a lot of weight, it is nothing like as common as other post-weight-loss operations like tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). As a very rough guide, if your nipples have drooped below the level of the crease beneath your breast, you may be a candidate for this procedure.

Breast Lift - Procedure

The operation is performed under general anesthesia or sedation, as an outpatient. It lasts typically 1-2 hours (up to 4 hours if combined with breast augmentation). The plastic surgeon makes incisions around the nipple and sometimes from the nipple down to the crease, and along the breast crease. The amount of scarring is related to the degree of breast-droop.

Breast Lift - Recovery

Bandages and stitches are generally removed within 7 days. Any swelling or bruising will improve rapidly, although the area may remain sore for some time. Patients are usually advised to wear a sports bra or ace wrap for about a month. Patients return to work after breast lift surgery typically within 5-10 days, and exercise may be resumed within 10-14 days.

Breast Lift - Complications

The biggest drawback of breast surgery is scarring. The breast scars are permanent, although they fade significantly within 6-12 months after the operation.

Cost of Breast Lift

A ball-park average price in the United States for a breast lift (mastopexy) is $5,500

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
