Weight Loss Surgery To Reduce Obesity - Research Into Gastric Reduction Surgery

Risks of Gastric Bypass For Morbid Obesity: Two Recent Studies

New studies on the health benefits and dangers of gastric bypass operations to reduce morbid obesity, published in October 2004 Journal of the American College of Surgeons, include the following findings:

• Super-obese people who have gastric-bypass surgery may live longer than other obese people who don't have the procedure. Bariatric patients have an 89% reduced risk of death.
• 2% of gastric-bypass patients die within a month after the operation, which is higher than the one in 200 or one in 500 previously reported.
• About 3% of gastric-bypass patients younger than 40 had died in the 13.6 years after the surgery, compared with 13.8% of those who did not have the surgery.
• Overall, 11.8% of gastric-bypass patients of all ages had died after 15 years, compared with 16.3% who hadn't been operated on.
• Patients are five times more likely to die if the weight loss surgeon has less experience.
• Gastric-bypass patients lose 67% of their excess weight.

The studies have limitations but are important, says Samuel Klein of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "They suggest that bariatric surgery improves long-term survival in extremely obese patients, but there is an increased risk upfront."
