Folate Deficiency After Gastric Bypass Surgery

A wide variation in folic acid deficiency has been reported after bypass surgery, ranging from 0% to 38% of patients, predominately as a result of decreased oral intake and possible malabsorption. It occurs less often in meat eaters. In one study of 348 patients, 35% had folate deficiency based on serum folate levels but no patient had symptoms of the deficiency. Folate deficiencies can be corrected with a simple multi vitamin, which typically contain 400 mcg of folate.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
