Vitamin B12 Deficiency After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Approximately 37% of GBP patients develop B12 deficiency. Normally, gastric acid helps free B12 from the food source after which it binds to intrinsic factor in the duodenum and is later absorbed in the distalileum. These mechanisms are disrupted after gastric bypass surgery. Although low serum B12 levels may be common, few patients develop symptoms of the deficiency. Oral supplements containing 500 mcg of B12 improve deficiencies in 80% of patients. Researchers found normal absorption of free synthetic vitamin B12 in gastric bypass patients.

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
