Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) Plastic Surgery Procedure

The plastic surgery operation known as arm lift, is designed to remove loose skin from the upper arms. Lipoplasty is typically not an effective plastic surgery option in this case. Liposuction does not address skin laxity. However if there are residual fat deposits, liposuction may be combined with the brachioplasty.

Stretched Skin After Weight Loss

A major problem after massive weight loss, following successful bariatric surgery or diet, is sagging skin on the arms. The only way to remedy this problem of loose skin is through an arm lift, also called brachioplasty.

Arm Lift - Method

Plastic surgeons typically make a surgical incision along the inner-arm, from the elbow to the axilla. This approach allows the surgeon to remove as much loose skin as possible. Arm lift can be performed under general anesthesia, or sedation. The operation takes 1-2 hours. Typically, stitches are dissolvable and bandages are removed within 7 days. Arm lift patients typically return to work within 3-7 days, while exercise may re-commence after about 2 weeks.

Arm Lift - Surgical Scars

Post-operative scars are the greatest disadvantage of brachioplasty. Typically they extend from the armpit to the elbow, along the inside of the arm. Like some types of abdominoplasty, brachioplasty exchanges one cosmetic problem (loose skin) for another (surgical scars). Although there are different degrees of skin drooping (ptosis) most post-weight loss patients with excessive amounts of loose skin on their arms are likely to find this procedure very beneficial.

Arm Lift - Complications

In addition to scarring along the inner arm, compilations can include infection, swelling of the arm, bleeding and bruising.

Contra-indications

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) is not suitable for patients who have undergone mastectomy or operations on the axilla lymph nodes.

Cost of Arm Lift

A ball-park average price in the United States for an arm lift (brachioplasty) is $4,900

Laparoscopic or open bariatric surgery, such as gastric banding or bypass is not an easy solution to morbid obesity and weight loss. It is a serious surgical procedure, involving health risks. To produce lasting weight loss it requires a long-term patient commitment to eating a healthy diet and following a regular program of physical exercise. Life-long use of nutritional supplements may also be necessary. So, before deciding, discuss your options fully with your doctor. © 2003-2008 Bariatric-Surgery.Info - Terms - Contact - Information - Resources - Add URL
